Being Black in UK vs. USA
"American Boy" singer Estelle sat down for a chat with VladTV and spoke briefly about her London upbringing and the differences between being black in the UK vs. being black in the US. Estelle says she grew up in West London in an area she equates to being the "Harlem" of city. Her mother is African and her father is West Indian, which she says is a unique mixture but not where she's from. When it comes to living in the US today, Estelle says it's not that different from where she lived in London, saying the hood is the hood, and black is black wherever you go.
Nike Matches $285M Offer For KD
Nike will match the gargantuan 10-year, $265-285 million offer reportedly offered to Kevin Durant by Under Armour, according to a report from ESPN.com’s Darren Rovell and Mark Stein. Durant has been with Nike for the past seven years, during which he earned $60 million. Specifics of the Nike offer have not come forward, but the company expects the contract will be enough to retain the MVP. Durant appears poised to stay with the company that counts LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Dirk Nowitzki, and many other super stars under contract. Under Armour’s top endorser remains Stephen Curry. The Nike deal will reportedly pay Durant more than he will make from the Oklahoma City Thunder. (You can thank the NBA’s terrible max contract clause for that.) The current Durant shoe model, the KD VII, sells at $150, and reports suggest that Nike’s price point is too low and that a higher price is expected. In terms of on-the-court issues, this could be a good omen for the Thunder. Durant has been rumored all summer to be considering a possible return to his hometown in two years to play for the Washington Wizards. Under Armour is a Baltimore-based company, just 40 miles north of D.C. This thinking might all be dumb Internet speculation, though. After all, Nike is headquartered just 15 minutes away from Portland, and the Trail Blazers’ biggest signings this decade are probably Wesley Matthews and Andre Miller.

PayPal & eBay To Split
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — The mobile payment service PayPal is splitting from eBay and will become a separate and publicly traded company next year. Almost a year after billionaire Carl Icahn opened a proxy fight and pressured eBay for a spinoff of PayPal, eBay President and CEO John Donahoe announced the split Tuesday. Donahoe will step down as CEO of eBay after overseeing the separation of the two companies and will not have a management roll in either of the two afterward. He may have a seat on the board at one or both, along with eBay Chief Financial Officer Bob Swan. EBay, based in San Jose, California, said that the separation was the best path for growth and shareholder value creation for each business. EBay is an e-commerce site that connects sellers to buyers. PayPal, acquired by eBay in 2002 for $1.3 billion, has been its fastest growing segment. In the most recent quarter, PayPal gained 4 million new, active registered accounts, up 15 percent, to 152 million. Consumers who use PayPal can send and receive payments online, with all transactions backed by prepaid user accounts, bank accounts or credit cards. The service is available in 203 markets worldwide and is on track to process 1 billion mobile payments in 2014. But major competitors are now getting into the mobile payment sector, including Apple. Last month Apple Inc. announced a new digital wallet service called Apple Pay that is integrated with its Passbook credential-storage app and its fingerprint ID security system. There is a push away from traditional credit cards, particularly after a string of high-profile data breaches that have ensnared major retailers like Target and Home Depot. Citibank predicts that the mobile payments business will grow from $1 billion last year, to nearly $60 billion by 2017. "A thorough strategic review with our board shows that keeping eBay and PayPal together beyond 2015 clearly becomes less advantageous to each business strategically and competitively," Donahoe said. Shares of eBay jumped 8 percent to $57.06 before the opening bell, close to its high for the year. Dan Schulman, an executive at American Express, will be the new president at PayPal, effective immediately. The 56-year-old will become PayPal's CEO once the separation takes place. Devin Wenig, currently president of eBay Marketplaces, will become CEO of the new EBay Inc. He will lead the eBay Marketplaces and eBay Enterprise businesses.
Walmart Responds to Tracy Morgan
(CNN) -- Walmart has responded to a lawsuit filed by Tracy Morgan over a deadly car crash that left the comedian in critical condition. The big box store blamed the injuries suffered by Morgan on his failure to wear a seat belt. Photos: Tracy Morgan\'s comedy career Photos: Tracy Morgan's comedy career Tracy Morgan speaks out after crash Walmart filed a 28-page response to a complaint by lawyers acting for Morgan and three others. Police said a truck driven by Walmart employee Kevin Roper collided with the rear of the vehicle in which Morgan was riding. Roper pleaded not guilty in June to criminal charges that include vehicular homicide and assault by auto. Morgan's lawsuit said Walmart was careless and negligent in the operation of the vehicle. It said the company should have known Roper had been awake for more than 24 hours at the time of the accident, and cited Walmart for not complying with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations enacted to combat the dangers of driver fatigue. The Walmart truck that rear-ended Morgan's vehicle was traveling 20 mph over the speed limit, according to a preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board. The "30 Rock" and former "Saturday Night Live" star was seriously injured in June after the truck slammed into a limo bus occupied by Morgan and four others on the New Jersey Turnpike. The crash killed the star's longtime friend, comedian James McNair, and injured the other passengers. Morgan was hospitalized with broken ribs, a broken nose and a broken leg. Morgan 'still struggling' from car crash In its response, Walmart said the injuries were "caused, in whole or in part, by plaintiffs' failure to properly wear an appropriate available seat belt restraint device." The company said by not using seat belts, the plaintiffs "acted unreasonably and in disregard of plaintiffs' own best interests." Driver pleads not guilty in Morgan crash Truck driver defends himself via Twitter Walmart did not directly address the claims regarding Roper because of the ongoing National Transportation Safety Board investigation. Walmart said Morgan's and the other plaintiffs' damages were not caused by the company or any of its affiliated employees. Instead, the chain noted the possibility that injuries "may have been caused by third parties over whom Walmart had no control." The next step for Morgan's side is to file a written statement specifying the amount of damages alleged in the initial complaint. Walmart is asking for a trial by jury. Representatives for Morgan did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
