Yesterday, Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C. reported that a patient was being treated for Ebola-like symptoms. Today, the hospital, the D.C. Department of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control announced that the patient does not have the deadly virus. Department of Health Director Dr. Joxel Garcia released a statement explaining that officials monitored the patient closely before ruling out the possibility of Ebola: Ebola has very clear symptoms that inevitably worsen over time, inclusive of fever, bleeding from the eyes and a growing rash that consumes over 75 percent of the human body. Based on the clinical presentation of the patient, the medical team was able to rule out Ebola, the patient will be treated for other illnesses.The District of Columbia has one of the best disease surveillance and epidemiologist teams in the country, I am confident in our ability keep District residents safe. D.C. State Epidemiologist Dr. John Davies-Cole added that the patient will be kept under close observation.
