Ducks, 'Noles ready for Rose Bowl

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Heisman Trophy winner on each side. The most hallowed venue in college football. The defending national champion on a 29-game winning streak. A game that's never been played before.

Welcome to the College Football Playoff at the Rose Bowl, where the past and present intersect to usher in a new era.\

Marcus Mariota and second-seeded Oregon (12-1) face Jameis Winston and third-seeded Florida State (13-0) on Thursday in the first national semifinal ever played at college football's highest level.

"They've got a great team. We've got a great team. It ought to be fun," Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher said Wednesday during his last pregame news conference at a hotel in downtown Los Angeles.

Next stop, Pasadena. But it's not the last stop. The winner gets a trip to Texas to play either Alabama or Ohio State on Jan. 12 for the national championship.

The Seminoles bring in a 29-game winning streak and last year's Heisman winner, Winston, into its second straight trip to the Rose Bowl. Florida State won the national championship there last season, beating Auburn 34-31 in the last BCS title game.

The Ducks are led by this year's Heisman winner, Mariota, and are in search of their first national championship. Oregon is a relative newcomer among college football powerhouses. The only thing left for the Ducks to confirm their status as a member of the nation's elite is a national title.

"It would validate things externally a lot more than I think internally," second-year Oregon coach Mark Helfrich said.

Mariota was a landslide winner of the Heisman this year, much like Winston was in 2013. The Hawaii native has accounted for a Pac-12 record 53 touchdowns (38 passing, 14 rushing and one receiving) and is the top-rated passer in the country.

"I think he's been an amazing guy and amazing player," Winston said.

Here's what to watch for when Oregon and Florida State play in the first College Football Playoff game:

FLORIDA STATE'S GREAT ESCAPES

After romping to a perfect season last year, this season has been filled with great escapes for Florida State. Five times the Seminoles have overcome a halftime deficit. Seven times Florida State has won a one-score game, including the Atlantic Coast Conference championship against Georgia Tech (37-35).

"You don't win 29 games in a row with luck ever," Helfrich said. "They're just unflappable in a lot of way."

But the 'Noles have looked vulnerable, which explains why Oregon is a 9 1/2-point favorite.

"Our team has never walked on the field and thought we were an underdog," Fisher said.

BIG FINALE

The conventional wisdom is that both Winston and Mariota will enter the NFL draft after this season, though both have at least a year of eligibility left. So one of them is likely about to play his last college football game.

Winston hasn't been as consistent this season as he was last year. The third-year sophomore has thrown 24 touchdown passes and 17 interceptions and has been plagued by slow starts. But when games have been on the line, he has more often than not made the big plays.

"I think it actually makes me better as a quarterback because things are not always going good, and when you get to the next level or even in life, when things are not going your way, you can't just hide up under a rock," he said.

In many ways it is as if this season has been a continuation of last year's title game against Auburn, when Florida State fell behind 21-3 in the first half and Winston led a game-winning drive in the final minute.

HEALTHY NOLES

Florida State's defensive line is as healthy as it has been in months, with defensive tackle Eddie Goldman and defensive end Mario Edwards Jr., having had time to heal up nagging injuries. Also, Nile Lawrence-Stample should be ready for the Seminoles after missing much of the season with a shoulder problem.

FABULOUS FRESHMAN

Two freshman running backs could take center stage.

Royce Freeman ran for 1,299 yards and 16 touchdowns for the Ducks, adding power to Oregon's speedy offense.

"Royce has been incredible," Mariota said. "From the moment he stepped on campus, we made certain that he was going to contribute."

Dalvin Cook came on late for the Florida State, running for 321 yards in the Seminoles' last two games.

Is NYPD Having a Temper Tantrum?

Are NYPD officers in Brooklyn in the midst of a massive temper tantrum to show their displeasure with Mayor Bill de Blasio?

Officers in the two precincts connected to murdered Officers Winjian Liu and Rafael Ramos have virtually stopped issuing tickets, according to a story in the New York Daily News, basically conducting an enormous work stoppage.

The precincts are the 84th, where Liu and Ramos worked, and the 79th, where they were murdered. The News said just one summons was issued in the 84th in the seek since they were killed. There were no summonses written in the 79th. In the previous week leading up to their death, the precincts issued a total of 626 parking, moving and criminal summonses.

In fact, the entire force of 34,000 cops appears to be engaged in the work stoppage, according to News figures. Across the entire city, just 2,128 summons were issued in the past week, compared to 26,512 for the previous week.

Arrests also have plummeted—115 in the past week for drugs, compared to 523 the previous week. Transit arrests have dropped from 662 to 20 and housing arrests fell from 258 to 65.

“Guys are on edge,” an unidentified police supervisor told the newspaper. “They’re still angry at the mayor and they’re not about to do anything they don’t absolutely have to do.”

If the numbers are telling a true story, it is a massive case of insubordination, affecting city revenue and ultimately affecting all city residents. It is, in effect, a paid strike—officers receiving their salaries without doing the jobs they are paid for.

The police force is demonstrating its extreme disrespect for the mayor of the city, showing him that he dare not express sympathy for the darker residents in their midst—even if some of those darker residents happen to be his children.

The city has not seen this level of disrespect since the mayoralty of David Dinkins, the city’s first African-American mayor, who was often at odds with the force in the 1990s after controversial shootings when he would visit the families of victims—taking sides with the enemy, in the eyes of many police officers.

It is also showing disrespect to city residents, who have every right to expect their police force to do its job. If the force feels such little compunction about exhibiting such massive levels of misbehavior, one wonders what kind of message they are getting from the police commissioner. He said he didn’t approve of the turning of their backs on the mayor during Ramos’ funeral. What does he think about them forgetting that they are police officers for the past two weeks?

Perhaps there is a silver lining in a city where the force stopped and frisked millions of Black and Hispanic males over the course of a decade: Black and brown boys could finally walk the streets in a small measure of peace.

Scientists May Have Traced Ebola
Scientists have traced the beginning of the current Ebola outbreak to a two-year-old boy named Emile Ouamouno, who lived in a small village called Meliandou in Guinea and died Dec. 2013. But how did the toddler get Ebola in the first place? A small team of anthropologists, veterinarians and ecologists think they may have the answer. In a paper published Tuesday for the journal EMBO Molecular Medicine, lead author Fabian Leendertz of the Robert Koch Institute in Germany hypothesizes that Ouamouno got Ebola from a hollowed out tree where children in his community would often play. That tree, it turned out, was home to a large colony of free-tailed bats, which have survived experimental Ebola infection in previous research. That particular species of bat has also been discussed as a potential source for the virus in past outbreaks.   Ebola is a zoonotic virus, which means that it can pass from animals to humans. In the past, Ebola outbreaks have been traced to bushmeat hunters killing and eating fresh meat from large primates. Leendertz and team ruled out that possibility for two reasons: one, usually the hunters themselves would be the first to come down with Ebola, and two, large primates are increasingly scarce and difficult to catch near Meliandou, according to villagers. So instead Leendertz turned his attention toward fruit bats, another known Ebola virus carrier. But the fruit bat colonies were relatively far away from Ouamouno's village and besides, fruit bat hunters weren't the first to get sick with Ebola. Finally, Leendertz focused on insectivorous bats, which children regularly hunted and grilled. He noted a large, hollowed-out tree stump about 55 yards from Ouamouno's home, along a well-trafficked path where women would walk on their way to a small river to do their washing. Villagers told Leendertz that children would often play in the hollowed-out tree, which turned out to be the home of a large colony of insectivorous bats. Children would often capture these bats and play with them, writes Leendertz, and the first cluster of Ebola cases in Meliandou were mostly children and women, he notes, but because he wasn't able to test any of the bats that lived in the tree, there's no way to know for sure if they did indeed transmit Ebola to the little boy. For now, he writes that his study is enough evidence to begin including insectivorous bats in Ebola outbreak analyses, where before scientists would point the finger at fruit bats or large primates. If Ouamouno is indeed the very first Ebola patient of this current outbreak, extra care needs to be taken to "avoid retribution attacks and stigmatization of the region," Leendertz cautioned. He also wrote that while the public needs to be informed of the risks of handling bats, they also need education about the "crucial ecosystem services" bats provide, which include benefits to humans. So far in this Ebola outbreak, there have been 19,497 cases and 7,588 deaths, according to the latest figures from the World Health Organization.
