Death Of Woman In Police Custody, Ruled A Homicide
The death of Tanisha Anderson, the Cleveland woman who died in police custody late last year, has been ruled a homicide. According to the Northeast Ohio Media Group, the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office announced its assessment on Friday, saying that the woman died “ as a result of being physically restrained in a prone position by Cleveland Police." Anderson suffered from heart disease and mental illness. The medical examiner’s office said those conditions were also factors in her death, per CBS News. Anderson died in November following an encounter with Cleveland police. The woman’s family had reportedly called the cops for help after the 37-year-old began having a mental health episode. When the police arrived, the family is said to have agreed to let them take Anderson to a hospital to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. Police have said that Anderson began to struggle with officers who were attempting to escort her to a police car, before she suddenly and inexplicably became limp. The woman’s family, however, told Northeast Ohio Media Group that an officer performed a "takedown move" on Anderson, roughly wrestling with the woman before putting his knee on her back as she lay prone on the ground. According to Friday’s medical examiner’s office report, Anderson suffered a “sudden death associated with physical restraint," per WKYC-TV. In the months since her death, Anderson has become a symbol in the ongoing conversation about police brutality in America, sparked last year by the deaths of Michael Brown, Eric Garner and others. On Friday, Anderson’s family released a statement  “demand[ing] justice for Tanisha, a thorough criminal investigation and an independent prosecutor that results in accountability by the police officers and the Cleveland Police Department,” per WOIO. Just last month, the Justice Department released a report accusing the Cleveland police of using excessive or unnecessary force at a “significant rate,” per CNN. The report -- the result of a two-year investigation -- added that officers were also found to have used excessive force on those "who are mentally ill or in crisis.” According to The Associated Press, the Cleveland Police Department has said in a statement that it is conducting an investigation into Anderson's death. Two officers involved have reportedly been placed on restricted duty.

Jerusalem's Most Contested Neighborhood
Throughout the past several months, Jerusalem has been a scene of clashes and violent attacks. Silwan, a Palestinian neighborhood just steps away from Jerusalem's Old City, has been at the heart of the unrest, and is becoming one of the most contentious neighborhoods in the most contested city in the world. As settlement expansion into East Jerusalem continues, Israeli authorities have ramped up their practice of demolishing homes built without proper permits — permits which are near impossible for Palestinians to acquire. In addition to the demolitions due to lack of permits, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced in early November the reinstatement of the policy of demolishing terrorists' homes, which Palestinians claim is a form of collective punishment. VICE News traveled to Silwan and met with Palestinians and Israelis living in this contested neighborhood at a time when Jerusalem is more divided than ever.
Playoffs open with Steelers' star rusher ruled out
Washington (AFP) - The National Football League's top rusher DeMarco Murray will lead Dallas against Detroit as the playoffs kick off this weekend, but Steelers star running back LeVeon Bell has lost his fitness battle.   Murray led the league with 1,845 rushing yards, but he and the rest of the Cowboys offense will face a formidable Lions defense led by Ndamukong Suh, who will appear after his one-game ban was overturned on appeal. The Steelers had hoped to have Bell -- whose 1,361 rushing yards were second in the league -- for Saturday's matchup with arch-rivals Baltimore. But the team confirmed Friday he would be sidelined after hyperextending his right knee in a victory over Cincinnati last Sunday. That leaves the Steelers relying on rookies Josh Harris and Dri Archer, and recently signed journeyman Ben Tate. "I feel like we all have made sure we did the things we needed to do all week so we can help out our team," said Harris, who came in for Bell after he was hurt against the Bengals. "As soon as they ask me to play, I am going to do all I can to make sure I can do it all." Cincinnati will visit Indianapolis on Sunday and the Steelers will host the Ravens on Saturday in American Conference first-round games, with New England and Denver having byes and awaiting the winners. In the National Conference, Arizona will visit Carolina on Saturday while the Cowboys entertain Detroit on Sunday. Defending Super Bowl champion Seattle and Green Bay earned first-round byes and await the winners next week. Bell, who was injured when Bengals safety Reggie Nelson tackled him low after a third-quarter reception, has no structural damage in his knee, so if the Steelers advance he could return this post-season. In the meantime, he's been lending his expertise in practice to Harris, Archer and Tate. "It's a big opportunity for all three of us," Archer said. "We are more than happy to step in." It's the same opportunity Suh thought would be denied him after he was suspended by the league for one game on Monday for stepping backwards twice upon the leg of Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers in a game the previous day. Suh won an appeal of the punishment, claiming numb feet prevented him from feeling his rival star's leg beneath his cleats as he stepped back. Carolina routed Atlanta to win the NFC South division last week and become only the second team with a losing record to qualify for an NFL playoff berth. The Panthers' reward for their fourth win in a row was a home playoff game but they will be tested by an 11-win Cardinals squad that will be led by third-string quarterback Ryan Lindley. Arizona lost Carson Palmer and Drew Stanton to injuries but have matched the club record for wins. "It's a whole new season now," Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said. "We're all 0-0 and we're in the tournament. We're going to get ready for this playoff game. We're not planning on being one-and-done." The Colts will be without offensive tackle Gosder Cherilus, who was placed on injured reserve with a groin injury.
Politicians With White Supremacist Ties
Former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke issued a warning to Republicans who have criticized House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) for speaking to a white nationalist group in 2002, saying they "better be looking over their shoulders." In an interview with Fusion, Duke said he has ties to politicians on both sides of the aisle, and he is ready to release names if criticism of Scalise continues:

Overall, Duke was rather flabbergasted by the new focus on Scalise. He said he has hosted both Democratic and Republican legislators at everything from conferences to his children’s birthday parties. He said he has met with Democratic legislators at least 50 times in his political life.

And he delivered a warning to both Republicans and Democrats: Treat Scalise fairly, and don’t try to make political hay out of the situation. Or he said he would be inclined to release a list of names of all the politicians — both Republicans and Democrats — with whom he has ties.

“If Scalise is going to be crucified — if Republicans want to throw Steve Scalise to the woods, then a lot of them better be looking over their shoulders,” Duke said.

Scalise has struggled to distance himself from Duke since a Louisiana blogger revealed  earlier this week that the GOP leader had associated with the former KKK Grand Wizard and had spoken to a group Duke founded, the European-American Unity and Rights Organization, in 2002. "I didn't know who all of these groups were, and I detest any kind of hate group," Scalasie said on Monday. Peter Wehner, a former adviser to President George W. Bush, said  the news about Scalise's 2002 speech is "acidic for the Republican Party." But GOP leaders -- including House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) -- are stantding by Scalise  amid the controversy.
