FBI Pursuing Suspect in Bombing of NAACP Offices
The FBI is reportedly pursuing a balding white man, approximately 40 years old, in connection with the detonation of a bomb outside the NAACP office in Colorado Springs yesterday. While no one was hurt in the explosion, knocking items off the walls and causing just minor damage to the sidewalk and the outside of the one-story building, NAACP and law enforcement officials say it could have been much worse because there was a gas can next to the incendiary device, clearly intended to cause maximum damage. But the gas didn’t explode. More than the damage, the real impact of the explosion was about what it could possibly represent. At a moment when the nation’s racial climate is more intense than at any time in recent memory, was this crude bomb some attempt by a “balding white man” to hurt the nation’s oldest civil rights organization—and thus hurt a nation of Black people in the process? “It has also not yet been determined if the motive was a hate crime, domestic terrorism, a personal act of violence against a specific individual, or other motive as there are numerous individuals and entities tied to the building in the vicinity of the explosion,” FBI spokesperson Amy Sanders told the Los Angeles Times. For some reason, the LA Times and other papers refrained from reporting on the race of the balding suspect, about whom the FBI said in a statement, “He may be driving a 2000 or older model dirty, white pick-up truck with paneling, a dark colored bed liner, open tailgate, and a missing or covered license plate.” But though the federal agents weren’t ready to call it a hate crime, Henry Allen, Jr., president of the NAACP’s local chapter, told reporters that the organization was targeted. “Apparently, we’re doing something correct,” he told CBS News Tuesday. “Apparently, we have gotten someone’s attention that we are working toward civil rights for all. That is making some people uncomfortable.” “We’ll move on,” Allen said in a separate newspaper interview. “This won’t deter us from doing the job we want to do in the community.” The Colorado Springs chapter of the NAACP is one of the largest chapters in Colorado and has been active in recent weeks, participating in local protests related to the deaths of unarmed Black men last year in Ferguson, Mo., and New York City.
Cool C Has Been Granted Stay of Execution
Cool C has been granted a stay of execution by a Philadelphia judge, NBC Philadelphia reports. This is his second stay after Philly Judge L. Felipe Restrepo granted him an emergency stay of execution in December. Philadelphia rapper  Cool Cis set to be executed by lethal injection on Thursday. The execution comes 19 years since Cool C was convicted in 1996 for the first-degree murder of Police Officer Lauretha Vaird during a bank robbery attempt. Cool C (born Christopher Roney), Hilltop Hustlers' Steady B  (born Warren McGlone) and Ernest Mark Canty reportedly robbed a Philadelphia PNC Bank on Jan. 2, 1996. Roney was believed to be seen in a surveillance video aiming a gun at the bank's entrance when Officer Vaird, a 43-year-old mother of two, walked into the bank -- after being alerted by an alarm -- and was killed. According to The Village Voice, despite surveillance video, "ballistic and forensic evidence" and eyewitness reports, Roney, 26 years old at the time, claims he was eating with his mother at the time of the robbery. Cool C's execution was originally scheduled for March 9, 2006, by former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell but was delayed due to litigation issues. Canty and McGlone received life in prison without parole, while Roney was sentenced to death. Cool C is known for his contributions to the Philly rap scene since the late '80s. He received recognition for his 1987 debut single "Juice Crew Dis," which targeted the hip-hop collective -- specifically members MC Shan and Roxanne Shante. Cool C signed to Atlantic shortly after the success of his album Down to the Grissle. He also garnered success with "I Gotta Habit" and "Glamorous Life," which samples Sheila E's  song of the same name. Cool C later joined Steady B and Ultimate Eaze to form the collective C.E.B.

Phylicia Rashad says she was misquoted
Phylicia Rashad raised eyebrows earlier this week when she commented on the numerous sexual assault allegations against Bill Cosby with a seemingly callous remark. "Forget those women," she told Showbiz 411columnist Roger Friedman on Tuesday. "And that was a misquote," she told ABC News in an interview on Wednesday. "What I said is this is not about the women. This is about something else. This is about the obliteration of a legacy." She added, "I am a woman. I would never say such a thing." Gloria Allred, in a news conference Wednesday with three new accusers, chided Rashad and called her out, saying, "Phylicia, you should be supportive of these women." Friedman posted a clarification on his Showbiz 411 site, writing: "I did not misquote Phylicia Rashad. But she didn't mean for it to be taken the way it was, and I should have punctuated. There was NEVER the meaning in 'Forget those women' that she was saying to actually forget or dismiss then. She meant, 'those women aside' – as in, she's not talking about that, she's talking about Cosby's legacy being destroyed." Friedman says that no one asked him to post a clarification, but he was taking down the quote. "It was conversational. Somehow this got twisted. I am really sorry if the way I presented it made it seem like either one of us was forgetting anyone. I've been at a hospice on and off for 10 says with a family friend of 40 years. So really, let's all calm down. What Phylicia was doing was defending her friend and his legacy. That's what she said, that's what I wrote, I'm sorry if it caused her grief. And no one asked me to write this. I'm just saying it because I like and respect her."
