Facebook Makes Groups App
Facebook annoyed a lot of people when it spun out Facebook Messenger from its main app, and now it's doing something similar with Groups. Starting today, users can download the Facebook Groups app for iOS or Android. The question, even more so than when Facebook spun out Messenger, is: Why? The standalone app doesn't seem to offer a radically new experience, or really any new features that improve the group-messaging interface. fbgroups1 Besides the groups-only notifications section, the only thing this app adds is the ability to create groups with preset themes, as seen in the image below. Users must still manually select participants, however. Contrary to what the screenshot suggests, the app does not integrate with Facebook lists to allow one-tap creation of groups based on those lists. fbgroups2 Facebook also attempted to induce group discovery by adding a "Discover" tab to the app that will suggest groups based on a user's interests. While the function is hardly revolutionary, it would be a departure from how people are currently using Groups. Looking for groups to actively participate in without any real-life prompting would be new, and very much what sites like Meetup and Yelp do. Don't worry about losing Groups functionality in the main Facebook app. The company isn't pulling a "full Messenger," and it says it will "continue to make those experiences faster and better, too."

Pardon's Son For Drug Charge
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe is defending his plans to pardon his son for a 2003 marijuana conviction, saying he's receiving the same type of second chance hundreds of other nonviolent offenders have had. Beebe appeared Tuesday on his monthly call-in show on the Arkansas Educational Television Network. He said he's not going to treat his son any better or any worse than others who have sought pardons during his administration. Beebe last week said his next round of intended pardons, due in December, would include one for his son Kyle, who was convicted in 2003 of felony marijuana possession with intent to deliver. Beebe, a Democrat, is leaving office in January due to term limits. He's being succeeded by Republican Gov.-elect Asa Hutchinson.
Netflix Postponing Bill Cosby Special
Netflix is postponing a planned Bill Cosby comedy special as the comedian faces multiple allegations of sexual assault. "At this time we are postponing the launch of the new stand-up comedy special Bill Cosby 77," a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement. Cosby's rep characterized it as a mutual decision. Read more Bill Cosby Rape Accuser Calls NBC Project "Irresponsible" The special was taped on Cosby's 77th birthday in July, and was slated to hit Netflix on Nov. 28. But old accusations of sexual assault against Cosby have resurfaced in recent months. Cosby has denied the allegations through statements from his reps and attorneys. He was asked about the allegations during an interview over the weekend with NPR's Scott Simon, but did not respond to the questions. On Tuesday, a new allegation surfaced, this one from former supermodel Janice Dickinson, who claimed in an Entertainment Tonight interview that Cosby raped her in 1982. In January, NBC revealed it was reteaming with Cosby for a new comedy series. One of Cosby's accusers, Barbara Bowman, called the NBC project "irresponsible" in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter. NBC declined to comment on her statements at the time.
